Gateway murder trial

Thoughts on this morning

with 9 comments

I’m not sure why the defense questioned several witnesses, asking if christopher Stroka took their statement if they weren’t going to bring up the IA report.

(Stroka resigned after an internal affairs report found him guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer – in September 2007.)

We’re in recess until 1:30 p.m. I will return then.

  1. It’s quite obvious that Christopher Stroka played an active role in this investigation. I find it incredibly tasteless and self-serving of the reporter to make reference to the events of an IA that was completely unrelated to the tragic homicide of Steven and Michelle Andrews.

  2. Althought completely unrelated, I can understand from a defense perspective why the events of an IA “could” be exploited. It could potentially discredit a witness. Now do not get me wrong – I completely agree with you that it should not be an issue. However, it is a defense tactic and I dont think placing blame on the reporter is a very fair thing to do. if you are going to place blame, blame the defense if it comes up.

  3. I think that the reporter had every right to bring up that IA report, related or not to the case. It calls up the witness credibility, and if the defense was doing their job they would have brought it up themselves. Like it or not.

  4. The reporter is there to translate trial proceedings and occurances. She not a defense attorney or prosecutor, therefore she should not speculate whether they are going to “bring up” Stroka’s past. Unless it was communicated in translation within the trial. IMO.

  5. Its a blog, yes to inform us what is going on in the courtroom, but a blog is also for someone’s thoughts and feelings. The reporter in this case wrote a “feeling” down in their blog which seems to have offeneded… didn’t offend me and its the reporters blog… if offended, don’t read it

  6. Just to be Clear – I am the “Rich” who commented at 1:36. not the one that commented at 2:40. I’m in complete agreement with “Just Me”

A final thought from me. The blogger or reporter is providing an invaluable service. I don’t normally follow blogs but it is awesome to be able to almost be in the courtroom while i sit here at work. kudos to this blog and the blogger(s).

  7. I saw a simple indiscretion and I commented on it. Nothing more. “Just Me” obviously houses a personal connection to the incident and he/she has a right to voice their opinion as well. Sometimes we just need to agree to disagree. With that said, this is a homicide trial so I’m certain the defense attorney completed his homework assignment on this one. Lets not be naive enough to belive that is was merely incompetance on the defenses part that the IA was not mentioned. The IA is not relative and it would have been thrown out anyway I assure you. I only found it distracting from the case considering neither attorney made mention of it. I think there is one thing we can all agree on…closure. Lets hope and pray for the healing of the Families.

  8. I assure you, I have no personal connection to the incident, or the person involved in the IA. Just made a comment on something that you started. That’s the great thing about this country… we can do that
